The EXPO is an important part of the High Quality Care for All agenda that puts quality at the heart of the NHS, providing an ambitious shared vision for the future of the NHS. This describes a reformed system that supports quality improvement. Creating an environment where innovation can flourish is a key enabler to achieve this future ambition and the profound effect on patients’ outcomes and experience of the NHS.
Successfully encouraging innovation in the NHS is challenging because new treatments, clinical advances and service development are constantly redefining what high quality care looks like.
A pioneering NHS can only be fostered by maintaining a focus on innovation, growing public expectation by the adoption of new ideas and the future economic challenges facing the Service by effectively diffusing innovation on a significant scale.
The EXPO is an important part of accelerating the adoption and diffusion of innovation across the NHS. The need to accelerate this was identified in Lord Darzi’s Next Stage Review in June 2008 which was the result of a 12 month consultation with hundreds of people and organisations within and outside the NHS.
Innovation is cental to how the NHS will continue to improve patient care, and deliver the vision set out in High Quality Care for All, blending quality, innovation and productivity. The approach is summarised with the acronym QIP. Innovation will play a crucial role in bringing together quality improvements which also drive up productivity. We know that if you innovate effectively you can actually deliver better or more care for the same level of resources.
The EXPO will help the adoption and diffusion of innovation by encouraging and inspiring thousands of people who have influence over the adoption of innovation in the NHS to interact with the latest innovative thinking, evidence and best practice.
