Babraham Research Campus; delivering biomedical innovation to healthcare

The Babraham Research Campus, one of the UK’s leading biomedical science parks, is home to the Internationally-regarded Babraham Institute and a vibrant biocluster of around 30 biotechnology and healthcare companies, delivering innovative solutions to address global challenges in healthcare and to promote healthier ageing.

Showcase Content:

The Babraham Research Campus, one of the UK’s leading biomedical science parks, highlights innovations from the internationally-regarded Babraham Institute and companies residing in its Bioincubator, which are developing innovative diagnostics and therapeutics to improve healthcare and healthier ageing. Colonix Medical will showcase a unique method for colon cancer detection and screening which offers patient and economic benefit. UroSens is developing a novel, rapid and easy to use non-invasive urine test for bladder cancer that will significantly reduce the number of invasive and expensive bladder endoscopies currently carried out. Cambridge Theranostics is developing products that tackle the primary cause of atherosclerosis, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke, and promoting healthy ageing. Phico Therapeutics is developing a novel platform technology to produce therapeutic anti-bacterials targeted at antibiotic resistant bacteria, including MRSA and Clostridium difficile.

Leading-edge research from the Babraham Institute will be profiled including: axon degeneration and neurodegenerative disorders; how cell signalling underlies conditions like cardiac arrhythmias, auto-immunity, inflammation, neurodegenerative conditions and cancer; the epigenetic basis of certain disorders; as well as recent discoveries that have potential to innovate personalised approaches to therapy.

Partners:

UroSens is developing a rapid and easy to use non-invasive urine test for bladder cancer that will significantly reduce the number of invasive and expensive bladder endoscopies currently carried out. Specific partners and collaborators include: leading CRUK-funded academics at University College London; NHS urology clinicians/surgeons; Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; Bristol Urological Institute, Bristol NHS Hospitals; Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (Charing Cross Hospital).

Colonix Medical Limited is providing a unique method for Colon Cancer Detection and Screening. Specific partners and collaborators include: NHS Hospitals; Primary Care Trusts; Private Hospitals; GP’s/Key Opinion Leaders – both NHS and private.

Cambridge Theranostics, a spin-off biotechnology company from the University of Cambridge, was formed to develop products that will reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and promote methods of achieving healthier longevity. Ateronon is a new 'once-a-day' supplement clinically proven to reduce LDL oxidation, the primary cause of atherosclerosis.

Phico Therapeutics is an early stage biotechnology company developing a novel platform technology to produce therapeutic anti-bacterials active against all species of bacteria. Initial products in development are targeted at antibiotic resistant bacteria, including MRSA and Clostridium difficile

The Babraham Institute is an institute of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), carrying out research and advanced training for the biomedical, biotechnological, pharmaceutical and healthcare communities, and underpins government’s national responsibilities for healthcare research and training. With a strategic focus on ‘healthy ageing’, Babraham scientists are studying biological processes, such as developmental regulation in the womb, investigating diseases at the molecular and cellular levels, tackling chronic diseases and aiming to address public health concerns, such as obesity. Exploring the mechanisms of cell signalling, gene regulation and how defects in these processes trigger disease has provided insight into conditions like hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure, autoimmunity, infertility, birth defects, cancer, bipolar disorders and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease.

Babraham is renowned for its research in the field of epigenetics, unravelling the complexity of our genomes to understand how gene–environment interactions may have consequences later in life or on future generations. Breakthroughs in epigenetics may revolutionise healthcare; many adult conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and psychiatric disorders have an epigenetic basis. Dr Wolf Reik’s research on Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome has led to better diagnostic tests to identify different forms of the disease and likelihood of tumour risks in children. Research illuminating epigenetic reprogramming has led to novel applications in regenerative medicine and cancer therapy. The Institute is the leading European epigenetics research centre and UK’s premier Institute focusing on epigenetics in regenerative medicine.
