The main focus of our stand and clinical forum will be to present new approaches aimed at improving outcomes in pregnancy care, with a particular focus on antenatal screening and CTG interpretation.
The recent “Saving Babies’ Lives” report (Sands charity, 2009) has highlighted some significant issues in obstetric care today in the UK, brought into sharp focus by the fact that stillbirth rates in the UK have remained static, while deaths from other causes have dropped dramatically. It also highlights that one of the major problems is that of determining risk – 50% of stillbirths are normally formed and their deaths are unexplained. The majority of these pregnancies were classified as ‘low risk’ - antenatal screening is clearly failing to identify these pregnancies. There are also well documented problems associated with one of the main screening / management tools in pregnancy – fetal monitoring. Traditionally a highly subjective process with high inter & intra-observer variation. Inappropriate use or action related to fetal monitoring has been shown to lead to significant numbers of poor outcomes. Another report has shown that we have the highest perinatal mortality rate in Western Europe. We will be presenting two products which have significant potential to address of the issues facing obstetricians and the NHS today with a view to improving outcomes.
