The department of Biosurgery and Surgical Technology at Imperial College London encompasses a broad range of world class research groups with specialist skills. They will be displaying a number of their innovative research outputs and technological advances which have been developed by applying science and technology to issues directly affecting patient care.There will be three sections to this stand:
- Technology – this will include the daVinci robotic system with interactive tasks to enable members of the public to experience 3D surgical capabilities; a display panel showing research topics such as body sensor networks, the i-Snake surgical robot, perceptual docking, natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) and eye-tracking including applications for the daVinci robot and a Remote Presence Robot which will be moving around the EXPO.
- Innovation and Design - The Department of Biosurgery & Surgical Technology, Imperial College, the Helen Hamlyn Centre and The Royal College of Art have collaborated to design a purpose built resuscitation platform or Resus:Station which visitors are able to view at the stand. There will also be the opportunity to experience a hardware interface called the Image Guided Interventional Needle Simulator (ImaGINe-S); try your hand on a novel curriculum developed for a Laparoscopic virtual reality simulator with a prize awarded for the best performance, attempt a synthetic Lipoma removal and view an entertaining animation centred on improving patient safety.
- Skills and Education –A huge inflatable theatre will be set up and staff will be performing highly realistic scenarios for clinical teams ranging from A&E, GP Surgeries to major surgery and ITU clinical scenarios used for team training. There will be a large number of staff on hand from varying disciplines to answer questions and provide guidance on the flexibility of this type of ‘clinical’ environment.
