NHS Innovations

NHS Innovations is a network of nine regional NHS Innovations Hubs set up in 2004 / 05 to promote and support innovation within the NHS.

Together, the Hubs offer a comprehensive range of technical, commercial and legal support services to NHS staff throughout England. Each Hub helps its local NHS Trusts and their staff to identify, protect and develop innovations that have potential benefits for patients, the Health Service and society as a whole.

It says a lot about the importance of innovation to the NHS (and the effectiveness of the Hubs in championing and supporting that process) that almost all of Hubs have received funding from the Department of Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Department of Health, to manage the commercialisation of innovations developed within the NHS. A number of the Hubs have also received funding from their Regional Development Agencies (RDAs); recognition of their key role, also, in supporting private healthcare companies and promoting partnerships between the NHS, the healthcare industry and academic institutions.

Speaking about NHS Innovations in a recent interview, Richard Clark, the Chief Executive of Medipex, the Innovation Hub for Yorkshire and Humberside said “ High Quality Health for All, the final report of Lord Darzi’s NHS Next Stage Review, recognized that innovation is absolutely essential if the NHS is to continue to deliver high quality patient outcomes.  The Innovation Hubs play a pivotal role in putting this strategic imperative into action by actively encouraging innovations arising from clinical needs and supporting the uptake of these innovations into the NHS.”
