The NHS Institute Design Zone:

Offering unique insights and methods of how to innovate within the NHS

“Design offers unique insights into service users’ needs and a set of methods to meet them. It crystallises problems and generates practical, cost effective solutions, providing a structured way to innovate, test ideas and deal with key public service issues including value for money, risk management, personalisation and sustainability. In particular, design allows ideas to be generated, prototyped and tested before large-scale investment is committed” - Design Council 2008

Recent evidence suggests that design as a process and methodology can be instrumental in driving innovation forward within the public sector. Collaborative designing, or co-design, allows users and providers to better engage in the service development and delivery, and prototyping techniques increase service performance through an early testing and refining of the solution before implementation. No longer can ‘design’ be seen as a mere form giving activity shaping the environments we desire. Design today has evolved from the design of aesthetically pleasant products into a whole new way of improving things, progressively addressing the redesign and improvement of whole service experiences whilst creating an approach that is highly transferable in its nature. Today’s designers are expanding their domain by using innovative design methodologies and techniques to redesign public services and address the social challenges imposed on society. We believe that building the knowledge and skills to use this type of design as a strategic stimulus to healthcare innovation will help the NHS tackle some of the challenges around our ageing population, chronic disease, health inequality and rising public expectations, especially in a time where the global economic downturn will aggravates existing pressures on our health system.

At the NHS Institute we’ve worked and learned from this new breed of ‘designers’ translating their techniques to empower the NHS workforce create the high quality and personalised services people increasingly expect. In our Design Zone you will be able to see some of the projects that we have done in collaboration with designers as well as other real examples of how design has been applied in the context of improving health care. You will also be able to meet some designers and by joining one of their interactive sessions – get first hand experience of some of their methodologies and techniques.
