The UK's first Academic Health Science Centres
In March 2009, healthcare innovation in London took a leap forward as it was announced that three of the UK’s first Academic Health Science Centres would be based in the capital.
Academic Health Science Centres (AHSCs) will bring together world-class medical research schools and leading NHS organisations to deliver innovation in healthcare to patients through improved clinical services, teaching and research.
These new formal partnerships between universities and the NHS will focus cutting-edge medical advances at the heart of the NHS and speed the adoption of innovation to benefit patients. They will also allow London to compete globally with other established medical education and research institutes in the US, Canada, Singapore, Sweden and the Netherlands.
Ruth Carnall, chief executive of NHS London said:
“AHSCs are a major part of the Lord Drazi’s original vision for better health care in London and they are now being rolled out nationally. The establishment of three of these centres in London will mean that the capital becomes a hive of innovation leading to new and faster translation of research to improve the services and treatments available to patients in London, nationally and around the globe.”
The AHSCs in London are Imperial College, King’s Health Partners and UCL Partners. All were chosen by a panel of internationally renowned clinicians and researchers.
