North East Strategic Health Authority is one of ten strategic health authorities in England and is responsible for the development of health services in the region, on behalf of the Department of Health. Its role is to make sure that services are fit for purpose, that quality and improvement targets are met and that NHS organisations in the region, such as primary care trusts, hospitals and the ambulance trust, are providing well-planned, good quality services to meet the needs of local communities.

At the event we will be encouraging people to have a go on our two concept2 indoor rowing machines and see for themselves the healthy benefits of indoor rowing.

The north east region has a clear strategy for tackling health inequalities and delivering the best healthcare in England.  We are working strategically with key partners to do this and have formed a strategic partnership with the Tony Blair Sports Foundation to impact on our region's health, widen participation in sport and position the NHS with young people as an employer of choice.

Encouraging young people into physical activity is essential if we are to combat obesity and to impact positively on the health inequalities of this region.  In line with Change4life, the government's 'eat well, move more, live longer' campaign,  this is one initiative which has been designed to provide the NHS and the DH with further information with regards to how children engage in sporting activities.  One of the key objectives of this project is to widen participation in sport and research has shown that indoor rowing attracts those that will be less likely to run on a track or play team games.

However, our population still has some of the worst health in the country.

Promoting healthy choices is crucial if we are to achieve our vision to become the healthiest place to live and work in England.
